1818 Superior Court Bond of Samuel Davis
Amy Butcher and Descendants - A Suit for Freedom
Know all men by these presents that we Samuel Davis are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency William W. Bibb Governor of the Alabama Territory & his successors in office in the penal sum of Four thousand four hundred Dollars to the where of we hereby bind our selves & our heirs sealed with our seals this 28th day of October 1818
The condition of the a bove obligation is such that where as certain people of colour, viz Amy Butcher & her descendants, Lessey & Launany in possession of said Samuel Davis & claimed by him as Slaves, have brought suit for their freedom and have by petition to the honourable Obadiah Jones Judge of the Superior court of Madison County prayed the benefit of the statute in such case made Now if the same said Samuel Davis shall have the Said Caty Hannah & Charles & each of them forth coming and subject to the order of said court at all times during the pendency of the suit for their freedom & shall a bide by & perform the Judgement of said court may render in the premises, then the a bove obligation to be voyd other wise to Remain in full force and virtue
