MADISON COUNTY TREASURES

"The Big Spring" - painting by William Frye ca. 1850

The original currently resides in the Rhett home in Birmingham. Note the painting features the Fearn Canal built in 1825 to carry cotton from the Big Spring to the Tennessee River. The view is toward the west. The horse and buggy crossing the canal would be heading north on Church Street. To the upper left is the back of the First National Bank building.
Huntsville had one of the first city water systems in the world. The Big Spring, with a daily capacity of 24 million gallons, furnished water for Huntsville until about 1957. The original water pipes were hollow cedar logs.
